Course Introduction

This occupation spans a broad range of industries, including but not limited to pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology, formulated products, food and beverages, nuclear companies, analytical science or quality control services, hospitals, and educational institutions.

The core purpose of this occupation is to work at the forefront of technology, conducting both routine and specialised laboratory testing (and manufacturing, where applicable), while providing a range of technical support functions throughout the organisation.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4/A* to C or equivalent including Science, English Language and Maths. Some employers may require additional qualifications depending on the role.

You will also need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job but we can assist you in finding a placement.

Adults who are aged 19+ with appropriate industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply, but will need to complete Functional Skills at level 2.

All applicants will be required to undertake an assessment in English and maths prior to enrolling.

Teaching strategies include a combination of one-to-one discussions, the provision of online resources or modules, self-directed learning, ongoing feedback, and training received in the workplace. It is expected that the Apprentice will engage in learning activities for a minimum of 6 hours per week. Learning will be assessed through written assignments, professional discussions, workplace observations, and/or online assessments. At the end of the programme, the Apprentice is assessed through three End Point Assessment methods as set out in the Standard’s assessment plan: (i) Knowledge Test; (ii) Observation with Questioning; and (iii) Structured Interview, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

You could progress to the Level 5 Technician Scientist.
