Course Introduction

Are you looking to gain a qualification in English and/or Maths? We offer both Functional Skills and GCSE courses to get you on your way.

Finding the right level to start studying is crucial for your success. Once you have applied, you will be asked to undertake an initial assessment to determine which level is right for you. We can help you succeed no matter what level you start at.

Functional Skills

These courses develop skills of a functional nature to allow you to feel more comfortable in handling everyday English and Maths situations. They also lead towards a nationally recognised qualification.

During the course you will develop your skills in Mathematics and English using practical situations.

GCSEs

GCSE English and GCSE Maths not only give you the reading and writing skills and in the case of GCSE Maths, numeracy skills, you’ll need for life, they are your golden ticket to apply for other courses, apprenticeships and jobs – having a grade 4 or above at GCSE English and GCSE Maths is quite often a standard requirement.

GCSE English

This course will cover:

Explorations in creative reading and writing:

  • In section A, reading a literature fiction text in order to consider how established writers use narrative and descriptive techniques to capture the interest of readers
  • In section B, writing your own creative text, inspired by the topic that you have responded to in section A to demonstrate your narrative and descriptive skills in response to a written prompt, scenario or visual image.

Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives:

  • In section A, reading two linked sources from different time periods and genres in order to consider how each presents a perspective or viewpoint to influence the reader
  • In section B, producing a written text to a specified audience, purpose and form in which you give your own perspective on the theme that has been introduced to you in section A.

GCSE Maths

You’ll study a variety of topics including:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Fees

Provided you have been a resident in the UK for 3 years or over and have not already achieved GCSE English and/or Maths at Grade 4/C, these courses are free.

ESOL students

If you are currently studying ESOL, you must complete your Level 2 in all elements before applying for Functional Skills/GCSE.

You will not be accepted into a class if you are on the ESOL waiting list. Please wait until the ESOL team contact you

Other

There are no formal entry requirements but you will undertake an initial assessment to determine the correct level for you to start at. You must be aged 19+.

The type of assessment varies depending on the level you are studying.

You can progress through the various levels of Functional Skills and onto GCSEs.
