Course Introduction

This course is perfect if you have an interest in caring for animals. You will be actively involved and learn about correct animal accommodation, handling, feeding, watering, and grooming of a variety of animals. While at the same time working towards gaining a Level 1 qualification.

You will learn above all aspects of animal care, such as:

  • Safe and effective working practices in the land-based industries
  • Preparing to work in the land-based industries
  • Assist with maintaining the health and well-being of animals
  • Study animals in the wild and their main features
  • Use and domestication of animals
  • Assist in feeding and watering of animals
  • Assist with the handling and restraint of animals

You will also learn about various professions relating to animal care including:

  • Veterinary science
  • Farming Breeding
  • The Equestrian industry

You can expect to be taught by our dedicated teaching team who offer a range of expertise, that they would like to share with you that include, behavioural and welfare of animals, farming, animal biology and equine, veterinary nursing, exotic and zoo experience.

From the experience you gain you will be given the opportunity to self-source 60 hours work placement, so that you can further put your learnt skills into practice, to gain valuable employability skills. This then can help you progress into employment or allow you to progress to a higher level of study.

You will learn in our animal care facility, and you can take full advantage of our links with animal organisations such as Stonebridge City Farm. We also organise visits to places such as Wollaton Park and possibly Crufts.

Programme of Study

When you enrol on your chosen course you will be automatically enrolled onto a Programme of Study (PoS), which will include:

  • A vocational qualification
  • English and maths
  • Personal and social development
  • Independent study
  • Work experience

Enrolling in a Programme of Study at Nottingham College offers you the opportunity to acquire not only industry-specific knowledge and skills but also to enhance your proficiency in English and maths if you have not yet achieved a grade 4 in these subjects. Achievement of these fundamental skills will benefit your progression both at college and in your future employment.

The Programme of Study includes practical work experience through social action projects and community engagement, helping you develop essential "future ready" skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, self-confidence, openness to learning, a sense of belonging, and digital literacy. Skills which are crucial for becoming work-ready.

You will also participate in enrichment activities designed to develop broader skills vital for success in any industry. These activities focus on problem-solving, communication, teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to follow instructions, all of which will enhance your CV. Additionally, personal development sessions will cover current and relevant topics such as PREVENT, British Values, and keeping safe, amongst others. You will receive support from a personal development tutor through one-on-one sessions focused on your wellbeing and growth. Furthermore, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will set academic targets to keep you on track towards achieving your goals.

Independent study is a key component of your timetable, providing you with designated time to work outside the classroom on tasks such as research activities, revision, improving digital skills, and completing assignments.

Given the practical nature of the course, consistent attendance is essential for your success and to reach your full academic potential. We expect you to attend every class and engage fully in all aspects of the Programme of Study.

Course Information

City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies.

Level 1

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 3–1 (D–G), including English Language and Maths at Grade 3–1 (D–G) or a relevant Entry 3 vocational qualification. With this you will be asked to sit an initial assessment, and this must show that you are ready to study English and Maths at Level 1.

Assessments will take place throughout the year and will include practicals, exams and assignment work.

With the necessary entry requirements, you could progress to City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Animal Studies or other Level 2 courses at college.

Students aged 16-18 don't have to pay tuition fees.

You will be expected to come prepared ready to study with the necessary stationery requirements. You will be expected to provide your own dark green lab coat and wellington boots.

To handle and restrain the animals you will need to have short clean nails, while wearing no hand/wrist jewellery and have (if necessary) your hair tied back.

There will be additional costs involved to travel to Stonebridge Farm, Wollaton Park and any other external trip that may be arranged during the year.
