Course Introduction

This course is ideal for those who have an interest within the hair and media make-up industry. It is an introductory course where you will learn the fundamental skills and techniques to start your journey within this industry.

This course involves not only the make-up service but will also develop your skills to provide hair services such as style and dress.

Units include:

  • Beauty related industries
  • Health and safety
  • Client care and communication
  • Apply make-up
  • Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments
  • Create an image
  • Art of photographic make-up
  • Body art design
  • Apply skin tanning
  • Art of colouring hair
  • Art of dressing hair
  • Make and style hair addition

The Programme of Study (PoS) will give you the opportunity to not only gain work specific knowledge and skills but will also study English and maths, if you have not already achieved a grade 4 in these subjects. Maths and English will be benefit you in progression not only at college, but also in employment. The PoS will provide an opportunity to carry out 30 hours of work placement related to your course.

You will also be engaging in enrichment activities that include the development of those wider skills which are vitally important when working in industry. These include problem solving, communication, teamwork, collaboration and following instructions all of which are required when working in industry.

You will also have a pastoral tutorial which will cover current topics including PREVENT, British Values, keeping safe, to name but a few. In addition, you will also have a personal tutor which will set academic targets to keep you on track to achieve.

Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media make-up offers varied services in the hair and make-up industry and includes a variety of practical and theoretical classes.

You will take part in trips, visits, seminars, and competitions alongside your course to further develop your understanding and knowledge of the industry which will be dependent upon your attendance and professional conduct.

You are also expected to undertake work experience for a minimum of 30 hours, either in a photography studio or a salon to enhance your skills, keep you up to date with the latest trends and aid employability and progression opportunities.

You'll also develop your abilities to ensure continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst working on your skills.

This qualification will also help you improve communication and customer service skills, awareness of environmental sustainability and commercial skills, all of which are valued.

Course Information

Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up

Level 2

You’ll need 4 GCSEs at grades 9–3 (A*–D), including English Language and Maths – one of English Language or Maths must be grade 9–4 (A*–C). Functional Skills Level 1 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 3 (D) and Functional Skills Level 2 can be used as equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above.

The units are assessed internally by subject specialist teachers. Most units consist of a mix of theoretical exams or assignments/ assessments and practical assessments within a realistic working environment.

Successfully completing the Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up course and maintain good attendance and good attitude to learning will further your chances on progressing to Level 3 Hair and Make-up.

You will be required to purchase a kit and uniform. Costs will be discussed at interview.

Hair needs to secured away from your face.

You may be required to provide your own models.

Students aged 16-18 don't have to pay tuition fees.
