Course Introduction

Our BA (Hons) in Film and Digital Broadcast Production degree brings together a wide range of skills and technical understanding from areas that are increasingly converging. You will build up production skills covering the creation of ideas from written concepts, scripts and audience research through to filming and editing for film, television, audio and online. The aim is that graduates will be best placed to secure employment either as freelance or for an organisation.

Delivered at our newly-developed Digital Media Centre at the City Hub campus, you will have access to our new broadcasting studio and podcasting/audio studio as well as the industry-standard Adobe Creative Suite. You will also have numerous opportunities to engage with other students aiming to get into the creative industries and will work in response to industry briefs.

About the course

Over 3 years, you will explore creative writing for media, television journalism, film production, audio studio production and online social media. You will have an opportunity to complete a production of your choice at the end of each year. You will be taught how to manage your own business in an industry which is becoming increasingly reliant on freelancing. You will also study digital marketing and how this rapidly-developing field can help build your own business as well as understand how you could work in an organisation producing relevant content.

What you will cover:

Year 1 (Level 4) provides clear foundations on which to build your skills in both practical film/broadcast productions and the concepts behind them. You will undertake practical units in camera, editing and broadcast studio technology whilst studying ideas and concepts in analysing visual imagery, interpreting narratives and understanding audiences.

Visual imagery
Audience and narrative
Single camera production
Television practical skills

Year 2 (Level 5) gives the chance to continue building and developing your practical skills and how to work with clients.

Year 2 modules:

TV newscast
Working with a client
Audio production

And choose one from:

Documentary video production or
Fictional video production

Year 3 (Level 6) provides the opportunity to show academic understanding with a dissertation whilst also analysing what skill sets they need to improve to meet practical and production based understanding needed in the industry through the completion of a module in advanced video skills. Finally, students undertake an independently planned and managed production project to demonstrate their skills to potential employers.

Entry Requirements

We expect applicants to be working at (or to demonstrate competency at) Level 2 or above in English/literacy and maths/numeracy. We accept GCSE passes in English Language and maths at Grades 9 to 4 (previously A* to C).

Applicants must also have a minimum of 64 UCAS points from study at Level 3:

At least two A Levels at A2
BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma
International Baccalaureate
Access to HE Diploma
T levels

Other combinations of qualifications and experience will also be considered, as will Level 3 qualifications not currently listed on the UCAS tariff.

Mature applicants not meeting the standard entry criteria but with relevant industry or life experience are very welcome to apply.

Teaching & Assessment

A mixture of traditional and innovative assessment methods will be used, including individual and group presentations, discussions, report writing, case studies, presentations, research and project work, examinations, reflective journals and work-based projects.

Progression

Graduates will be well-placed to progress to postgraduate education, training or employment in the global creative industries - such as: camera operator, sound/lighting technician, editor, producer, director of photography, videographer, games developer, film-maker or into the teaching profession.
